How to Use Your PC as a PS3 Router

If you have a PC computer with a wired connection, and do not want to spend extra money on a router, you can set up your PC as a Wi-Fi hotspot. What this will do is distribute IP addresses to connected devices, just as a router would. You can then connect devices, such as the Playstation 3, to your computer and the device will recognize it as a valid Wi-Fi connection with no hassle.

Things You'll Need

  • PC Computer with Windows XP or higher, an Ethernet port, and wireless capabilities
  • Ethernet Cable

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to an output on the Internet connection. For most Internet services, this will be a modem, and the Ethernet output will be on the back. Connect the other end of the cable to your computer. This will be on the side if you are using a laptop, or on the back if you are using a desktop.

    • 2

Go to Control Panel by clicking "Start" then "Control Panel." Click on "Network Connections." Right click on your Ethernet connection and select "Properties."

    • 3

Click the "Advanced" tab at the top of the properties box. Select the box that says "Allow other network users to connect through this computer." Click "Allow" if you get a security warning.

    • 4

Start up your PS3. Select "Settings" from the main screen. This will look like a briefcase. Next, select "Network Settings."

    • 5

Click "Internet Connection Settings" on your PS3, then click "Yes" to the security warning that pops up. Select "Easy" in the settings then "Wireless." Next, select "Scan." This will scan for available Wi-Fi connections.

    • 6

Navigate to your PC Wi-Fi. This will be the same number as your PC host. Click the X button on your controller to connect and you will be able to access the Internet on your PS3.
