Internet Connection Test
The PS3 settings allow you to run an Internet Connection Test to help identify any connection issues. From the home screen on your PS3, browse to "Settings," "Network Settings" and choose "Internet Connection Test." Run the test to see the results. The first test attempts to obtain an IP address from the Wi-Fi router, then the PS3 connects to the Internet, looks at Universal Plug and Play availability, Network Address Translation type and the speed of the connection. If you are unable to obtain an IP address, then your PS3 isn't connecting with your Wi-Fi router correctly. If you cannot connect to the Internet, or are unable to connect to the Playstation Network, the settings on your router might be restricting your connection.
IP Address Disagreement
Your Wi-Fi router can either assign an IP address automatically to your PS3, or it can be set manually. However, if your router is set to automatically assign the IP address and the PS3 is set to a manual IP address then it's possible that your router is giving the PS3's IP address to another device. When the PS3 is turned off, the IP address is released from the router and then the next device that connects is given that address. You can change the settings of your PS3 by browsing to "Settings," "Network Settings" and choosing "Internet Connection Settings (advanced settings)." Select "Wireless," "Scan" and select the name of your local network. Enter the security type and password for your Wi-Fi network. Under "IP Address Settings," select either "Automatic," if that's what your router is set to provide, or "Manual," if you have a specific IP address designated for the PS3 through your Wi-Fi router's configuration.
Router Security
If your Wi-Fi router has built-in security, it may be preventing your PS3 from connecting to the Internet or the Playstation network. You can disable the router security, which is not recommended if you have any other devices connected to the Internet through it, you can forward the network ports that the PS3 uses through the router's security, or you can set the PS3 to be outside the router's security zone. Port forwarding is the best method to ensure your PS3 can connect to the Internet. You will need to configure your router to forward the TCP ports: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 5223 and 8080. Set the router to forward the UDP ports: 3478 and 3479. Instructions on port forwarding can be found in your router's manual.
Automatic Configuration
If you have a router that enables automatic configuration, you can use the Playstation settings to configure your Internet connection for you. Browse to "Settings," Network Settings," "Internet Connect Settings" and choose "Easy." Select "Wireless" for your network type and then choose "Automatic" for the WLAN Settings. You will be prompted to press the automatic configuration button on your router, and if necessary, enter the PIN on your PS3. Buffalo makes routers with AirStation One-Touch Secure System setup and other manufacturers employ the Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Whether you're using AOSS or WPS, the process is similar: you press the button on the router to enable the connection configuration and then use the PS3 to complete the process following the on-screen instructions.
