How to Get Free Mods for a PS3 Slim

By default, the PlayStation 3 entertainment console can only install package files that are signed by Sony. If you are running a custom firmware on your system, however, you can install any package file you want and modify your system to your liking. A number of websites allow you to download these homebrew modifications for free, and install them just as you would anything else from the PS3's XrossMediaBar.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and navigate to a website that offers PS3 homebrew mods for download. Dashhacks.com, PS3homebrew.org and PS3hax.net are a few of the sites that offer these for download.

    • 2

Click the download link associated with the mod that you wish to install. If the mod comes in a ZIP file, double-click the ZIP file to extract the PKG file.

    • 3

Insert the USB flash drive into one of the computer's USB ports. Click the "Start" button in the computer's task bar and select the "Computer" option.

    • 4

Double-click the flash drive's removable storage device icon to view its root folder. Drag the PKG file that you downloaded in step two into the flash drive's root folder.

    • 5

Right-click on the removable storage device icon and select the eject option. Remove the flash drive from the computer and insert it into one of the PS3's USB ports.

    • 6

Turn on the PS3 system and scroll over to the "Game" section of the XMB. Scroll down to the "Install Package Files" option and press the "X" button. Highlight the PS3 mod that you want to install and press the "X" button. The homebrew mod will now be installed on the system.
