What Is PUP for PS3?

Formatting

• All PS3 update files contain a .PUP extension and a name like ̶0;PS3UPDAT.̶1; The files are compressed and accessible directly from the Sony PlayStation update server. The process isn't automatic, but manually updating your PS3̵7;s software on a regular basis ensures you have the latest system patches, software and enhancements.

Updating Via PS3

• Initiating the update process via your PS3's controller buttons requires navigating to ̶0;Settings̶1; before selecting ̶0;System Update.̶1; Your gaming system must be connected to a wired or Wi-Fi Internet connection for the update to start; the on-screen prompts will help you complete the process.

Downloading PUP Files

• Your PS3 also is capable of accessing a formatted removable flash drive or memory stick and loading an update file. You must make a folder on the device named ̶0;PS3̶1; in all capitals, then open the folder and create a subdirectory with the name ̶0;UPDATE̶1; in all caps. On the PlayStation website's System Software Updates page, you̵7;ll see a link to the most recent update version. After clicking the ̶0;Download Now̶1; button, you can save the .PUP file to the ̶0;UPDATE̶1; folder. An icon in your system tray, labeled ̶0;Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media,̶1; displays picture of a USB cable; clicking on the icon, and then on the name of your memory stick or flash drive, ejects it from your computer.

Flash Drive or Memory Stick Update

• After inserting the memory stick or removable drive into your PS3̵7;s USB port, you can use the PS3 controller buttons to navigate to ̶0;Settings̶1; and then select ̶0;System Update.̶1; When you choose ̶0;Update via Storage Media,̶1; your PS3 will start searching your memory stick or flash drive to find the PUP file. Your PS3 will prompt you when the update process is complete, but you can confirm it by again navigating to ̶0;Settings̶1; and selecting ̶0;System Update.̶1; Clicking ̶0;System Information̶1; will confirm your system̵7;s update version. If you see a version older than the one on the System Software Updates page, you must repeat the update process.
