My PS3 Stopped Sending the WLAN Signal

The PlayStation 3 was the first of the current generation of video game consoles to be released with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. Now a standard in all modern consoles, the PS3's Wi-Fi capabilities give you the ability to log on to the PlayStation Network, download and purchase game content and stream movies through Netflix and other digital media outlets. There are several factors that can impact the PS3's Wi-Fi performance ranging from network settings to hardware failure.
  1. Check Internet Connection

    • Check the status of your Internet connection before attempting to troubleshoot the PS3. Log on to the Internet with other computers, smartphones or mobile devices with Wi-Fi capabilities. Check to make sure that all of the connections to your cable modem and router are firmly secured and restart your cable modem and router to clear any opened connections to the router. Turn on your PS3 after your router has restarted and try to connect to your Wi-Fi connection.

    Clear Interference

    • Position your PS3 in an area that allows it as much open-air access as possible. Avoid placing your PS3 or wireless router in an enclosed fixture, such as inside a closed entertainment center or hutch. If possible, put the PS3 in the same room as your wireless router to minimize obstructions in the wireless signal. Move any large objects, including house plants or other large decorations out of the way of your wireless router and PS3 to minimize any interference that they may be causing.

    Disable Media Server Connection

    • The PS3 can connect to Digital Living Network Alliance media servers to playback audio and video files shared on the server. While this feature can be useful, it can also interfere with the PS3's Wi-Fi connectivity. To disable the media server connection, scroll to the "Settings" menu on the Xross Media Bar and select "Network Settings." Click the "Media Server Connection" option and select the "Disable" option.

    Confirm Security Settings

    • The security settings saved on your PS3 may prevent you from connecting to your wireless router. The PS3 can locate multiple Service Set Identifiers when scanning for wireless networks. Navigate to the "Settings" menu on the XMB and select "Network Settings." Verify that you're connected to the correct SSID. Check the WEP or WPA security key for your router. Carefully input these security keys because they can be case sensitive. Some wireless routers require a Machine Access Control address to allow Internet access to media devices. To locate your PS3's MAC address, navigate to the "Settings" menu on the XMB and select "System Settings." The MAC address will be accessible from the "System Information" link.

    Hardware Failure

    • Internal hardware failure can cause Wi-Fi connectivity problems. One sign of hardware failure is a series of blinking lights alternating from green to yellow to red on the front of your PS3. Hardware problems can't be diagnosed on your own and you must send the system to Sony (sony.com) for repairs. Contact Sony's customer service department to schedule a repair of your system.
