How to Do Dual Commentary on a PS3

Recording and sharing video gameplay is a popular and still growing corner of the online video market. Services such as YouTube, GameTheater or Own3d.tv offer a wide variety of gameplay clips and full-length walk-throughs and tutorials produced by gamers looking to educate or show off their proudest achievements. If you choose to record your own gameplay footage from a PC or a home console such as a PlayStation 3, you can improve the quality of your work by adding your own commentary explaining your strategy or simply offering thoughts about the game. For an even better experience, consider asking a friend to join you for a dual commentary. You can produce a highly entertaining video whether your friend is working with you, competing against you or simply watching you play.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a Digital Video Recorder to your media center. This device connects to your PlayStation 3 and TV and records your gameplay. The Hauppauge 1445 HD-PVR, AVerTV USB HD DVR and Ezcap116 are examples of DVRs that record footage from your video game console.

    • 2

Connect a microphone or gaming headset to a nearby computer. If your commentary partner is in the same room, make sure he uses a different machine, as you may run into trouble trying to use two microphones on the same computer.

    • 3

Download and install a sound recorder such as Audacity or Free Sound Recorder to your computer(s).

    • 4

Record your commentary while playing and recording the game.

    • 5

Connect your DVR to your computer and transfer all recorded files.

    • 6

Obtain video editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas or Windows Movie Maker. Of these, only Windows Movie Maker is completely free, while Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas are available for a short-term free trial.

    • 7

Import your gameplay footage and commentary tracks to your video editing software. Additionally, you may import images, movie clips or other media to spice up your final product.

    • 8

Adjust the audio tracks until they correctly line up with each other and the gameplay.

    • 9

Export your file to a popular and portable file type such as MP4. For optimal quality on popular video sharing sites such as YouTube, try to render in a common widescreen HD format such as 720p or 1080p.
