Lack of Available Resources
A common cause of this problem lies in the available memory of the PS3. The unit features powerful RAM units, but heavy use of system resources may cause lag in video playback and other services. Do not attempt to play video files while also using multiple other services, including video games, chat features or multiple installation processes. Each of these processes draws on the available resources and can lead to video lag.
Compression Issues
The ̶0;.avi̶1; format lends itself to a wide variety of video compression types, known as codecs. The unit may struggle with some uncommon codecs, and the video playback tools of the PS3 disallow playback from the DivX 3.11 codec entirely. If the level of compression exceeds what the PS3 can easily handle with its available resources, the video may appear jerky or noticeably slow.
Streaming Problems
Streaming ̶0;.avi̶1; files over the Internet may suffer from bandwidth issues. This results in long buffering times between video segments, and attempting to download other movies or software on the unit compounds the problem. You should stop all other downloading or streaming applications when streaming videos for the best playback quality.
Other Potential Causes
Problems with external hardware may also create video lag. This includes damaged memory cards or weak signals from video equipment using wireless transmission. Replace damaged equipment as soon as possible to prevent future serious errors. Weak signal strength may improve if you recharge the batteries in your video equipment or move the transmitting unit closer to the PS3. Some PS3 services, such as the ̶0;Filmy Media Viewer̶1; do not accept ̶0;.avi̶1; as a valid format for videos.
