Ventilation Slots
Like all electrical devices, your PlayStation 3 will generate heat when in use. There are several ventilation slots on your PS3 that allow for airflow through the console. Place your PS3 flat on a smooth, flat surface to provide sufficient ventilation. Avoid placing the console on a cloth surface that may block the ventilation slots.
Location of the PS3
Closed entertainment centers or entertainment centers with other heat-generating devices may cause your PS3 to overheat. When possible, place the PS3 in an open area, free from enclosures that will retain heat. Do not stack the PS3 on top of other electronic devices or devices that will generate heat when in use.
Cleaning the Vents
Dust buildup inside of your PS3 can block airflow and limit the performance of your cooling fan. Unplug the PS3 from the power supply and use a can of compressed air or a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery brush to gently clean the dust out of the PS3. Perform this cleaning once a month to avoid dust build-up in the future.
Hardware Failure
Hardware failure can happen gradually or spontaneously in your PS3. A flashing display of green to yellow to red lights on the front of your PS3 is a sign that there has been a hardware failure inside of your console. Internal hardware problems may be covered by your PS3 warranty, but the repair must be made by a licensed Sony repair center.
