How to Install Games Onto XMB With a PKG File

Hundreds of full-sized, downloadable games are available in the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3. To play these games, you must first download the PKG file that contains the game and then install this file onto the PlayStation 3's XrossMediaBar. Once the PKG file is installed, the game can be accessed directly from the XMB, allowing you to play it without having a physical disc inserted in the system.

  Turn on the PlayStation 3 console and scroll to the "PlayStation Network" section of the XrossMediaBar. Select the "PlayStation Store" option to enter the marketplace.

  Select the "Games" option, followed by the "PS3 Games" option. Select the letter of the alphabet corresponding to the first letter of the game's title and then select the game's icon.

  Select the "Buy Now" option and confirm that you want to purchase the game to download its PKG file.

  Press the "PS Home" button on the controller and select the "Yes" option to exit out of the PlayStation Store.

  Scroll over to the "Game" section of the XMB and select the PKG file you downloaded in the previous step. Select the "Install" option to begin installing the file. A progress bar appears on the screen displaying the installation's progress.

  Wait for the PKG file to finish installing. Once the installation is complete, the game will appear as an icon on the PS3's XrossMediaBar.
