How to Jailbreak a PS3 Step-by-Step

Since 2010, people have been able to jailbreak their devices without risking a lawsuit. The Playstation 3, or PS3, console is one of the favorite targets because, without a jailbreak, users are unable to play any third party games or install any third party applications, such as a media streaming application. Jailbreaking the PS3 is relatively simple and does not require opening the console. However, the process will void your Playstation's warranty.

  Open the Web browser on your computer and navigate to "xup.in/dl,57897311/PS3UPDAT.rar/" to download the jailbreak software. Click the "Download" button and select a folder in which to save the archive.

  Extract the contents of the archive somewhere on your hard disk drive and a file named "PS3UPDAT.PUPjail" will be created. Remove the "jail" part from the name.

  Plug the USB stick into one of your computer's USB ports. Windows will recognize the stick as an external storage device and will create a new drive for it. Use the file browser to open the drive and backup all files.

  Right-click the new drive and select "Format." Select "FAT32" from the file system drop-down box. Choose the "Quick Format" option and click on the "Start" button to format the USB stick.

  Create a new folder on the stick and name it "PS3." Create a new folder under the PS3 folder and name it "Update." Copy the PS3UPDAT.PUP file to the update folder and unplug the stick from the USB port.

  Plug the USB stick in your PS3's USB port and turn on the console. Go to the "Settings" menu and select "System Update." Use the "Update via Storage Media" option to apply the update from the flash drive.

  Click "OK" when the console warns you that it found Version 3.55-jb. Accept the conditions and select the "Install Update" option to start updating the PS3. Do not turn off the console or unplug the USB device. The PS3 will beep four times and shut down when the jailbreak is complete.

  Start the PS3 by using the button on the console. Install a third party game or application to test whether it was properly jailbroken.
