Purpose of Adapters
Adapters for using electronics in foreign countries serve two primary purposes. First, they convert the voltage from outlets -- which is 220 volts in most overseas destinations, as oppose to 110 volts used in the United States -- to avoid transmitting too much electrical energy to devices built only to run on 110 volts, which isn't a concern regarding the PlayStation. Second, they possess prongs that fit into foreign outlets that an American power cord won't fit.
Obtaining Power Cords
If you plan to live abroad or travel abroad for a long period of time, you may decide to purchase a power cord for your PlayStation that fits the wall outlets in the country in which you plan to live or travel. To obtain a cord, visit any retail store that sells Sony PS3s -- or, depending on where you are, search an electronics outlet or superstore for one.
Reasons for Using Adapters
Although PS3 devices can accommodate both 110 volts and 220 volts AC, some advantages to using adapters do exist. For example, various regions of the world use different outlets, so buying a "universal adapter" offers prolific travelers more versatility than buying a single power cord.
Surge Protectors
Whether you use the actual 110-volt cable or an adapter, it's advisable to plug the PS3 into a surge protector or power strip. A power strip protects the device in the event of a power surge, whether from a storm or a malfunction with the power grid. If a power surge occurs and the PS3 is plugged directly into the wall, it may be damaged or destroyed -- and Sony's limited warranty doesn't cover surges.
