How to Improve the Speed Between a PC and PS3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) can be connected to your PC to utilize the PS3's Media Server capabilities. The Media Server allows the PC to stream media (audio, video and photos) to the PS3. Unlike a wired connection, a wireless connection is susceptible to many issues that can reduce the speed of the connection. A slow connection can result in buffering (annoying pauses) when trying to stream audio and video to the PS3. A few measures can be taken to improve the connection between the PC and PS3.

Instructions

    • 1

If you're wireless, try plugging in instead. Using an Ethernet cable usually results in higher transmission speed than wireless connections.

    • 2

Restart the modem and router. Press the "Restart/Reset" button on the back of both devices. If there is no Restart/Reset button, unplug the device from its AC outlet for 30 seconds and reconnect it.

    • 3

Move the PS3 closer to the router if possible. Walls and other wireless devices may cause interference that affect the performance of the wireless connection between the PC and PS3. If moving the PS3 closer to the router is not possible, add larger antennas to the router to increase the connection strength and range. Refer to the router's documentation for instructions on connecting the antennas.

Verify that your router is using the most recent firmware. Newer firmware updates may increase the performance of the router. Check the manufacturer's website (such as linksys.com or netgear.com) to find the most recent drivers for your router model. The router model/number is generally displayed on the back or bottom of the router.
