PS3 Ethernet Cable Connection Problems

The PlayStation 3 console has dozens of online features available, including movie rentals, multiplayer games, Netflix Watch Instantly and video chat with the PlayStation Eye. A wired Internet connection is usually a simple setup, but if your PS3 is experiencing difficulty connecting to the Internet, one of a few common problems may be the cause. In most cases the solutions are fairly simple, so you can get back to enjoying your PS3 without much delay.
  1. PS3 Setup

    • If the PS3 isn't configured for a wired Internet connection, it won't use the Ethernet cord to get online. Also, if the console used a wireless Internet connection previously, it will continue to assume it should use that connection and not the Ethernet cord. Step through the connection process again by navigating to the "Network Settings" option in the XMB Menu's "Settings" section; then choose "Internet Connection Settings." After you confirm that you want to proceed, select "Easy" and wait a moment for the PS3 to connect to the Internet. If you still can't get online, the problem is most likely not with the console or its settings.

    Connections

    • If any of the cords connecting your PS3 to the Internet are loose or disconnected, you won't be able to get online. Make sure the Ethernet cord is securely plugged into the PS3 and into the router or modem, whichever you're using. If you are using a router, make sure its cord is securely connected to the modem itself, and lastly ensure that the modem is connected its associated wall port, either a cable jack for a cable modem or a phone jack for a DSL modem.

    Damaged Cord

    • Look over all the cords to make sure they're not damaged. If you see an Ethernet cord that's frayed, cut or otherwise in poor condition, it may not be able to transfer data and get your PS3 online. A frayed Ethernet cord is not dangerous, but you should go ahead and replace the cord since repairing it isn't usually a possibility.

    Resetting Devices

    • Reset your PS3, modem and router, if you use a router. Sometimes obscure errors cause connection problems and you just need to reset the devices to fix it. Turn on the PS3 with the power option in the XMB Menu's "Users" section or press and hold the power button for a few seconds. To reset your modem and router, unplug them for about 30 seconds and then plug them back in.

    Router Problem

    • If you use a router, that device could be causing the connection problems for one of many reasons. Bypass it temporarily by plugging the PS3 directly into your modem, just like the router is currently plugged into your modem. If you can get online that way, then the problem is with the router, and you should check its documentation to see how you can resolve the problem.

    Restore Default Settings

    • In rare cases you may need to restore your console's default settings, which is a hard reset that deletes all data from your PS3 and reverts it to its original factory state. Since you'll lose all your personal data like game progress, music files and movie files, you may want to back up your data by going to "Settings," then "System Settings," then "Backup Utility," which allows you to back up your data to a USB device. Later you can select the "Restore" option from "System Settings" to restore your data. To restore your PS3's settings, select "Settings," then "System Settings," then "Restore Default Settings." Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the restore.

    Contact Support

    • If you've done everything you can but your PS3 still can't get online using an Ethernet cord, you may need to contact Sony support for help. You can call (800) 345-7669 between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. PST on Mondays through Saturdays, or you can call between 7 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. PST on Sundays.
