What Does the PSP Hookup to the PS3 Do?

One of PlayStation's more innovative features includes the ability to connect your PlayStation Portable or PSP to your PS3 through a wireless connection. This has been dubbed "remote play" by Sony PlayStation, and essentially involves the PSP displaying information from the PS3. You can execute some interesting and more intriguing functions through this unique connection.
  1. Viewing Multimedia

    • The PlayStation 3 is capable of storing movies, pictures and music on its hard drive (or on an external drive connected to the PS3). After connecting your PSP to your PS3 through remote play, you can view the multimedia on your PSP device. This includes photos, music and video clips; however, you cannot view Blu-rays or DVDs on the PSP through remote play, nor can you play copyright-protected videos. Super Audio CDs can be played rarely, although they may get compressed down to a lower quality audio format before being played on the PSP.

    Connecting via the Internet

    • You don't even have to be in the same area as your PlayStation 3 in order to connect it to your PSP. Although these devices can be linked by a LAN (local area network), they can also be connected over the Internet. You must first pair the devices through a LAN, but after the initial pairing, you can connect your devices for remote play from anywhere that a wireless Internet connection is available. This allows you to share your PS3's information with your friends and family on the go, using any Wi-Fi access point to connect your PSP to your PS3.

    Playing Games

    • In the beginning stages of remote play, there was only one video game (Lair) that could be played through the PSP via the PS3 connection. Over time however, more games have become compatible with remote play, and now every PS1 game is remote play compatible, as well as half a dozen or so PS3 games. As of 2011, there are no PS2 games that are remote play compatible, but many people speculate that more games will be available in the future.

    Using the PlayStation Network

    • The PlayStation Network is the network that connects PlayStation users from around the world to one another for interactive online game play. When using the remote play feature, you can access the PlayStation Network from your PSP in order to tweak your "Friends" list by blocking or adding other users. In addition, the remote play allows you to message your friends using the chat feature. You can also access the PlayStation Store via remote play, which allows you to purchase and play video games. Remember, not all video games are remote-play compatible. Just because you can buy games via the remote play connection doesn't necessarily mean that you can play them on your PSP.
