Why You Need a Router
When you go online with the PlayStation 3, you have access to many new gaming and entertainment possibilities. If you have a USB hard drive or computer connected to the router, you can also use the PS3 to access media stored on it. This lets you view pictures, watch movies and listen to music that you've store on the hard drive. To get online, you need to give your PS3 access to the Internet through your Belkin router.
Finding Your Computer's Settings
During the router setup process, the router typically assigns settings to your PlayStation 3 automatically. You need to know your router's and computer's IP addresses if the router fails to automatically assign these settings. To find this information, click "Start" and type "cmd" in the search box. Click "cmd.exe." In the window that opens, type "ipconfig." Press "Enter." Note the numbers next to "Default Gateway" and "IP Address." The first number is your router's IP address. The second number is your computer's IP address.
Setting Up a Network
To set up a wired network with a Belkin router, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the PlayStation 3. Connect the other end to a free Ethernet port on the router. If you want a wireless connection, you do not need to connect any cables. Power on the console and use the PS3 controller to select the "Settings" option. Choose "Network Settings" and "Internet Connection Settings." Select "Yes" and "Easy." Press the "Triangle" button to automatically adjust the router settings. Select "Wireless" or "Wired connection," depending on your connection type. Occasionally, the settings do not automatically adjust. If this happens, you need to enter the settings manually.
Entering Settings Manually
To enter your router's settings manually, select the "Custom" option from the Internet Connection Settings menu on the PlayStation 3. Select "Auto-Detect" and then select "Manual." Use the on-screen keyboard to enter the first three number groups listed for your router's IP address. For example, if the number next to Default Gateway was 192.172.2.1, type "192.172.2" in the box. Change the last number to "50." Move the cursor to the subnet mask box and type "255.255.255.0." In the next box, type your router's IP address. Select "Save Settings."
Enable Port Forwarding
After you save the settings on your PlayStation 3, go to your computer and open an Internet Browser. Type "http://192.168.2.1" in the address bar and press "Enter." Click "Login" and "Submit." Click "Virtual Servers" on the left side of the screen. Click on "Enabled." Type a description, such as "PlayStation 3," in the box. Set the first three Inbound Port boxes to "TCP." In the first box, enter "80." In the second, type "443." In the third box, type "5223." Change the next two Inbound Port boxes to "UDP." In those boxes, enter the numbers "3478" and "3479." Next to each number, enter your computer's IP address in the "Private IP address" field. Click "Apply Changes."
