Instructions
Turn off any applications on your PC or other video game consoles that may be using bandwidth. Applications such as file-sharing programs, current downloads or other online games on a different system can cause large amounts of lag when playing an online game on your PlayStation 3.
Complete all downloads you are performing on your PlayStation 3 before using any online component. The PS3 can continue downloading games and movies in the background; however, this can cause large amounts of lag especially in online games. It is better to complete or pause the downloads prior to using an online component of the PS3.
Place your PlayStation 3 and your router close to each other if you are using Wi-Fi. The closer the two components are to each other, the stronger the signal and the less lag you encounter.
Connect your PlayStation 3 directly to your router via an Ethernet cable. This allows you to bypass any wireless issues and obtain the fastest connection for your PlayStation 3.
Upgrade your Internet connection if possible. For example, consider cable over DSL and consider a cable package that offers you fast speeds. Additionally, you can upgrade your router, choosing one that offers increased wireless range if using Wi-Fi or increased speed and stability over your old router.
Select "Internet Connection Settings" under the "Settings" menu on your PS3's main menu to update your connection settings when changes have been made. This allows your PlayStation 3 to take full advantage of your connection settings.
Select "Internet Connection Test" under the "Settings" menu each time you make a change. This allows you to check the differences in your connection speed each time a change is made.
