PS3 Cannot Detect Music in Media Server

The Sony PlayStation 3 is a media server compatible device that can receive streaming audio from other media servers such as your computer. The most common causes of the media server connection not working is an improperly configured network connection, PS3 settings and the audio file itself. The PS3 will not stream incompatible audio formats.
  1. Network Properly Not Configured

    • Regardless of whether the PS3 has a wired or wireless connection to the router, the link between the PS3 and router must be established before the media server can be enabled. By default, the media server connection is disabled on the PS3. Set up and test the media server connection from the Network Settings menu located under the Settings icon on the PS3 main menu.

    Media Server Software Not Compatible

    • Although other media server programs may work with the PS3, Sony recommends that you use Windows Media Player 11 or higher when streaming to the PS3. Other programs may be intended for specific devices or include features that prevent them from working properly with the PS3.

    Incompatible Audio Format

    • The PS3 supports MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA and ATRAC audio formats. Incompatible formats will not be displayed in the PS3's music menu. Audio files with DRM protection, such as music purchased from iTunes or the Zune store, may also not be compatible with the PS3 even though they may still be listed in the music menu.

Music Not in Media Server Software

    • In regards to Windows Media Player, files cannot be streamed until they've been added to the Windows Media Player Library. This may also be a requirement for other media server software. Check to see if the file is in the Library and verify that you have allowed access to the PS3 from the Stream/Media Sharing menu within Windows Media Player or the appropriate menu within the media server software you use.
