Hands
Begin handling the PlayStation 3 controller correctly by holding it right-side up using both hands. The controller has two handles descending from the main body; hold the handle on the left side of the remote in your left palm and the handle on the right side of the remote in your right palm, taking care to squeeze lightly with each hand. Squeezing the handles too hard during gameplay results in sore hands after extended periods of gameplay.
Thumbs
Your thumbs are vital to correctly using a PlayStation 3 controller. After ensuring that you are holding the controller correctly, let your left thumb sit on the left joystick and your right thumb sit on the right joystick. The left thumb is responsible for moving not only the left joystick but also the directional pad to the left of the joystick. The right thumb, in addition to maneuvering the right joystick, also should be used to press the ̶0;Square,̶1; ̶0;Triangle,̶1; ̶0;Circle̶1; and ̶0;X̶1; buttons.
Index Fingers
When holding the PlayStation 3 controller, extend the index fingers on each hand and place them on the trigger buttons on the front of the controller. These buttons (i.e., L1, L2, R1 and R2) are on the left and right sides of the controller, respectively. Use these buttons by pulling them in toward the device in the same manner you would pull the trigger of a gun.
Other
When the PlayStation 3 controller is being handled correctly, you become accustomed to moving your thumbs and fingers around to press the necessary buttons. Each game has different uses for the buttons, so it's important to consult your game's instruction manual to learn the controls prior to playing. Many games also have training modes that slowly familiarize you with the controls before playing the actual game.
