Linking a PS3 to a Computer Wirelessly Without a Router

A compelling feature about the Sony PlayStation 3 is its wireless technology. If you have a wireless router, you can access your computer through the PS3 from the wireless network. However, not everyone possesses such equipment. You can still access your computer in the same fashion, albeit through a different setup process. If you wish to access your computer's videos, music and images through your PS3 without a router, it is important that you understand the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your computer. Your computer requires a wireless Ethernet card -- a component that allows it to receive wireless network signals -- in order to connect to your PS3.

    • 2

Click on the round Windows logo at the bottom-left corner of your desktop. A menu will appear. Select "Control Panel" from that menu and you will be taken to the Windows Control Panel.

    • 3

Select "Network and Internet," followed by "Network and Sharing Center." You will be taken to a window showing your basic network settings.

    • 4

Click on "Local Area Connection" and then select "Properties." In the Properties window, click on the "Sharing" tab. A new window will show up containing two check boxes. Ensure that both of those are checked. Press the red "X" button to close the window and do the same thing to close any other windows.

    • 5

Turn on your PS3. You will see the main screen.

    • 6

Scroll to the "Settings" icon using your controller's left joystick. A drop-down menu will appear. Choose "Network Settings" from the menu, which will take you to the Network Settings section.

    • 7

Select "Internet Connection Settings" from the menu. Select "OK" from the next screen to confirm that you wish to change these settings. You will proceed to another screen labeled "Select Setting Method."

    • 8

Use your right joystick button to select the "Custom" option. Move the joystick to the right to go to the "Select a Connection Method" screen.

    • 9

Select "Wireless Connection" and press your joystick to the right to continue to the "IP Address Setting" screen.

    • 10

Select "Automatic" and move your joystick to the right. The next screen is labeled "Set the DHCP Host Name."

    • 11

Select "Set" and press right to continue. The next few screens will be automatically set to the necessary settings, so no further selection is needed. Keep pressing to the right until you come to a screen that lists your settings. Press "X" to confirm them. The next screen will contain a single option labeled "Test Connection."

    • 12

Press "X" to test your connection. The process can take one minute or longer. Once the PS3 confirms the connection, press the "O" button to go back to the main menu.

    • 13

Select either "Music," "Video" or "Photo" from the menu. These are the types of media that the PS3 can detect on your computer. A drop-down menu will appear.

    • 14

Select "Search for Media Servers." This will scan for any computers directly connected to the PS3 through wireless means. A "Scanning...Please Wait" screen will appear. This process will take approximately 30 to 60 seconds. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that your PS3 has found a media server, which refers to your computer.

    • 15

Access your computer. Your computer and PS3 are now connected. You can access the computers images, videos or music by selecting "PS3 Media Server" from the "Music," "Photo" or "Video" menus.
