Can a PS3 Fan Cause Problems?

Sony's PlayStation 3 is essentially a computer disguised as a gaming console. It houses memory and a processor just like your computer, allowing you to game, connect to the Internet and download games and movies. Just like your computer, processing makes your PS3 hot during use, which is why it contains an internal fan to keep its essential components cool and functioning well. A defunct fan causes a bevy of problems, even some that permanently affect your console.
  1. Symptoms

    • If your fan is starting to cause problems with the P3S console, you'll notice the issue in a variety of ways. Your device might shut down suddenly. This is a Sony fail-safe put in place to avoid excess heat from harming the components inside your machine. A defunct fan is also manifested in heat emanating from the device. Noise from inside the machine often means the fan is still working -- albeit laboriously -- to cool your device.

    Possible Problems

    • The major problem a dysfunctional fan causes in your PS3 is overheating. Overheating disrupts your game play and causes your console to malfunction. If your fan is dirty and noisy, it's possibly circulating dust and dirt through your console, which could result in components malfunctioning. PS3s carry a one-year warranty from Sony, which means you might be able to have the console replaced if it stops working due to a broken fan, but if you're out of warranty, you'll need to address the problem as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

    What to Do

    • If your PlayStation 3 is exhibiting some of the classic signs of a faulty fan, such as excess heat or a grinding or loud whirring noise, one of the easiest fixes is to have the fan replaced. First, try cleaning the vents of your PS3 with compressed air to see if it remedies the problem. If cleaning doesn't help and your console is under warranty, you can send it to Sony for service and a replacement fan. If your console is no longer under warranty, a video game store specializing in repairs could replace the fan to get back up and running again.

    Prevention

    • The best way to keep your fan running smoothly is to ensure that it doesn't have to work harder than necessary to keep your console cool. That means situating your PS3 in an area where it's away from other electronic devices, has plenty of air circulation and is protected from dust when not in use. Don't leave your PlayStation running when you're not using it, and use compressed air to keep the vents clean. Listen when you start your PS3, and take action if it's unusually hot or noisy so you can have it serviced before real damage occurs.
