My PS3 Keeps Freezing & Ticking

A PS3 gaming console that keeps freezing and ticking can leave much to be desired when you're playing your favorite games, or watching DVDs and Blu-ray discs. There are many problems that can cause your console to freeze and tick. Understanding them can help you solve the problem safely.
  1. Damaged or Scratched Discs

    • Gaming and movie discs are extremely sensitive. They are prone to scratches, dirt, fingerprints and smudges. When you insert a dirty or scratched disc in your PS3's tray, it has to work much harder to read the data on the disc. In some cases, the disc will play up to a certain point, and then freeze or crash. When your PS3 gaming console freezes, there isn't much you can do except restart it. If the discs are dirty, wipe them gently with a soft, dry cloth. Don't use liquids because they can erase the data written on the discs and damage them even further.

    Overheating

    • A PS3 gaming console will often overheat if it's not stored properly. A system that is overheating can cause internal motherboard problems, which in turn can cause it to freeze or tick during game play. The vents on the gaming console are designed to allow sufficient airflow to cool down the units processing unit. If the system's internal temperature becomes elevated, the power indicator will flash alternately red and green. In addition, the system will begin to make a loud humming noise. If your system is overheating, turn it off and unplug the power cord. Let it cool down for a few hours before restarting it.

    System Overload

    • Although this doesn't happen quite often, your PS3 gaming console might freeze if you have several devices connected to it. PS3 includes USB ports that allows you to connect accessories such as flash drives to it. Occasionally, your unit might freeze when you're transferring data from a USB flash drive or memory card. If the system freezes, disconnect all accessories and restart it. Pressing the power button for at least 15 seconds will cause the system to go into standby mode. Once the system resets, reconnect the accessories and turn it on again.

    Tips

    • To increase their lifespan, store discs in their cases. Because discs are extremely sensitive, storing them in a dry place away from extreme temperatures can be ideal. If your gaming console is overheating, turn it off and leave it unused for a while. If the system is in a closed cabinet, moving it to a properly ventilated location can solve overheating problems. To improve airflow, avoid placing the console on a carpet or rug with long fibers. In addition, Sony recommends placing the system at least 10 cm, or 4 inches, away from a wall surface.
