How to Connect a PS3 to a Standard TV After Connecting It to HDMI

After connecting the PS3 to your television using an HDMI cable, the system only responds to the HDMI cable. This causes problems when attempting to change televisions and cables, resulting in a blank screen or no audio. If this occurs, you must restore the system's video settings to factory state in order for the system to recognize your new cable and TV.

Things You'll Need

  • PS3 composite AV cable

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the PS3's "Main Power" switch on the back of the system.

    • 2

Unplug the system's AC power from the wall outlet.

    • 3

Unplug the HDMI cable from the PS3 and TV, if necessary.

    • 4

Plug the composite AV cable's large end into the PS3's rear "AV Multi Out" jack.

    • 5

Plug the other end -- featuring yellow, white and red plugs -- into the television's AV inputs, matching the cable's colors to the TV's input colors. Refer to your TV owner's manual if you do not know the AV input locations.

    • 6

Plug the PS3's AC power cable back into the wall outlet and switch the system's "Main Power" back on.

    • 7

Turn on the TV and change the input to "AV." Refer to the TV's manual if you do not know how to cycle through the set's inputs.

    • 8

Hold down the PS3's front "Power" button for five seconds, releasing the button after the console makes a beeping sound two times. The video output settings are reset, allowing the system to recognize the AV composite cable rather than the HDMI cable.
