How to Know if Your PlayStation 3 Is Dead

Imagine you are just about to complete the highest level of a difficult game, and your PlayStation 3 shuts down without warning. The yellow light, known to gamers as the "Yellow Light of Doom," appears on the console or the red flashing light comes on. If you or one of your children is a serious gamer, a malfunctioning PS3 may seem like the end of the world. Get the right information to figure out if the system is dead and must be replaced, or if you just need to restart it.

Instructions

    • 1

Check all the cords connecting the PlayStation 3 and the television. Make sure everything is plugged in securely and nothing is damaged. If none of the lights appears on the front of the PS3 when you press the power button, the system is probably unplugged.

    • 2

Touch the PS3 console to see if it's unusually hot. This is a sign that the system is overheated. Give it a break by turning off the console for 30 minutes, then try powering it back up. If the system still will not reboot, the PlayStation 3 might be dead and must be sent to Sony for a diagnosis. The repair process begins from the Support page of the Sony website.

Check the lights on the front of the PlayStation 3. If the red power status light flashes red instead of remaining solid, there is an internal problem with the PS3. The system must be sent to Sony for repair or replacement.

Watch the console to see if the lights flash green, yellow, then red. This indicates an internal error with the PlayStation 3, which could be that it's dead and cannot be fixed by the user. Send the system to Sony for a complete diagnosis.
