How to Change the Layout on a PS3 Controller

The PlayStation 3 video game console utilizes the DualShock 3 controller for basic play and console operations. When playing a game on the PS3, some gamers may find that the controller layout unsatisfactory. Certain PlayStation 3 software titles allow you to customize the control scheme for the DualShock 3 controller, giving players the freedom to play the game more comfortably. Note that not all PlayStation 3 software titles enable users to customize the layout of the controller.

      Select the game you wish to play, and insert the disc into the PlayStation 3's drive. If the game does not automatically begin, select the title's icon from the PlayStation 3 menu and press the "X" button.

      Select "Options" or "Settings" from the game's main menu. Note that in order to reach the main menu, you may need to press the start button at a title screen.

      Navigate to the sub-menu that contains controller options. Depending on the software title, this may be "controller" or "controls" or may be something more complicated like "game" or "gameplay."

      Select the controller layout from the controls sub-menu. Games that allow you to customize the controls will provide the option from this menu. Typically, to customize controls users select specific actions in the game and assign them to a button on the DualShock, but may be required to select one of multiple pre-determined button layouts.

      Confirm your customized controls once you have finished making your selections. Save the game and return to the main menu. Your new control scheme will now be reflected during gameplay.
