Your PlayStation 3̵7;s Blu-ray drive is hosed, and you̵7;ve been missing out on killing zombies and blowing up alien bases. Sending your PS3 in for repairs would take a few days and buying a replacement isn̵7;t feasible for your current budget. Thankfully, you can remove your console̵7;s Blu-ray drive and replace it with another, if you̵7;re willing to use elbow grease and you̵7;re unafraid of broken warranty agreements.

Instructions

  1. PlayStation 3 (Original Model)

    • 1

Unplug all cables from the console and place on a flat, stable surface.

    • 2

Pry out the rubber grommet on the left side of the console using the small flat-head screwdriver or a thin butter knife.

    • 3

Unscrew the Torx screw with the T8 Torx head screwdriver.

    • 4

Push the top of the case to the left, sliding it out and away from the connector that you unscrewed in the previous step. When the case stops sliding, pull it upward and set aside. The interior casing of the console will be revealed.

    • 5

Unscrew the seven screws that attach the interior casing to the console using the Philips head screwdriver.

    • 6

Pry up the left rear corner of the casing. You may need to insert the flat-head screwdriver or butter knife into the slots at the rear of the casing and lever the security clips inward to unlatch the casing.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 for the right rear corner of the casing.

    • 8

Pull up the Blu-ray drive and disconnect the black cable and ribbon cable. The Blu-ray drive has now been removed from the PS3.
