How to Hook Up a PS3 to a 1080i

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) supports multiple video resolutions to accommodate standard and high-definition televisions. A high-definition resolution, 1080i is available only on HDTVs that support HDMI or component video connections. Although the PS3 does not include any type of HD cable, any standard HDMI cable will work with the PS3, or a PS3 component cable can be purchased separately. Because the PS3 is primarily an HD device, games and video will look noticeably better in 1080i.

Instructions

  1. HDMI

    • 1

Connect the HDMI cable to the "HDMI" port on the back of the PS3 and the HDTV.

    • 2

Change the HDTV to the "HDMI" video mode. Press the "Power" button on the front of the PS3 to turn it on.

    • 3

Select "Yes" when asked if you want to use the HDMI cable for audio and video. Select "Yes" when asked if you want to use the most optimal settings for the HDTV. If 1080i is the highest resolution available on the HDTV, the PS3 will default to it automatically. If it does not default to 1080i, select "No" to manually change the resolution. Select "Yes" when asked to accept the settings. Select "Yes" to save the settings.

    Component

    • 4

Connect the flat side of the component cable into the "AV Multi Out" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the red, blue and green plugs on the opposite side of the component cable into the red, blue and green component ports on the HDTV.

    • 5

Change the HDTV to the "Component" video mode.

    • 6

Press the "Power" button on the front of the PS3 to turn it on. The PS3 logo will appear on-screen. Unlike the HDMI cable, the component cable does not prompt video configuration. To change video settings, scroll to the "Settings" icon on the PS3 main menu. Select "Display Settings."

    • 7

Select "Video Output Settings." Select "Component/D-Terminal." Select "1080i" as the resolution.
