Setting Up PS3 Cable With Surround Sound

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a Blu-ray gaming machine that can output movies and video games at a maximum resolution of 1,080p. The system also has audio capabilities to match its picture quality with support for 7.1 surround-sound digital audio. You can output surround sound from the PS3 using either an HDMI or optical digital cable.

      Switch off the power switch on the back of the PS3 console and unplug the system̵7;s power cable. This will allow the console to recognize its new AV connections when it is powered back on.

      Connect the PS3 to your audio system̵7;s AV receiver with either an HDMI cable or optical cable. Both of these ports are found on the back of the PS3 console. If you are using an optical cable, continue to connect the console to your TV with the HDMI cable or PS3 Multi AV cable, whichever you were previously using.

      Plug the console̵7;s power cable back into a wall outlet and turn on the system.

      Scroll to the left in the PS3̵7;s Xross Media bar to the ̶0;Settings̶1; tab and select ̶0;Sound Settings.̶1;

      Choose the ̶0;Audio Output Settings̶1; option to configure the PS3̵7;s audio for your current setup.

      Select either ̶0;HDMI̶1; or ̶0;Digital Out (Optical),̶1; depending on your connection.

      Select ̶0;Manual̶1; and check the checkboxes next the audio formats supported by your audio system.

      Press the ̶0;Right̶1; button on the controller to proceed to the next screen and press ̶0;X̶1; to save the audio settings.
