How to Boot PS3 With Dev XMB

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) has secret features that can be unlocked if you own a developer unlocking dongle. The most important feature is the ability to install your own package files. This option is placed on the PS3 menu (XMB). Booting the Sony PS3 into developer (dev) mode requires the PS3 to be running 3.41 or 3.55 Sony PS3 firmware. It is all about timing when it comes to starting the PS3 in dev mode.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the Sony PS3 off, and pull the power cable out of the unit.

    • 2

Connect the developer dongle to the left USB port on the PS3.

    • 3

Plug the Sony PS3 back into the power outlet.

    • 4

Press the "Power" button and immediately press the "Eject" button. The PS3 will stutter as it is loading the developer's code from the dongle.

    • 5

Select the "Game" tab on the PS3 menu and verify that "Install Package Files" is located on the menu. If that option is there, the process worked. If the feature is not there, start the process over, and press the "Eject" button faster.
