How to Open Up a PS3 to Add Linux

Although it not permitted to install the Windows or Mac operating systems onto your PS3, you can add Linux to it. Installing Linux onto your PS3 can convert it to be a video game console and additional computer in your home. You can also view your Linux operating system through the TV connected to your PS3. Backing up your PS3 data can help ensure nothing is lost during installation.

      Insert your external USB hard drive into your PS3's USB port. Select "Settings," "System Settings," "Backup Utility." Select "Backup" and select your external USB hard drive as the backup location. This ensures you don't lose any data when adding Linux.

      Select "System Settings," "Format Utility" on your PS3. Choose "Format Hard Disk" and select "Yes" to confirm your choice. Choose "Custom" and select "Allot 10GB to the Other OS." Select "Quick Format," then "Yes." Press "X" to reboot your PS3.

      Attach your USB mouse and keyboard to the PS3's USB ports.

      Insert your Ubuntu installation CD into the PS3's disc drive. Select "System Settings," "Install Other OS." Select "Other OS," "Yes" to reboot your PS3 and add Linux.
