Removing the Blu-Ray Drive on a PS3 With No Attached Circuit Board

The PlayStation 3 gaming console has a built in Blu-Ray drive that is capable of playing PlayStation 2 and 3 games, Blu-Ray discs such as movies, DVDs and audio CDs. If you have a PlayStation 3 that has no circuit board, the unit won't work, so you can remove the Blu-Ray drive to sell or use it to replace another PS3's broken drive.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the PS3 from the wall outlet or power strip. Disconnect any audio/video cables and controller cables.

    • 2

Locate the small rubber feet on the left side of the PS3. If your PS3 is standing straight up, the feet will be on the bottom instead of the side.

    • 3

Place the PS3 on its side so the "PlayStation 3" logo is on the top. Use the flat head screwdriver to pop off the rubber foot in the center to expose a Torx screw.

    • 4

Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the one screw. Slide the top casing to the left and lift it off to expose the inner cover.

    • 5

Remove the seven screws holding the inner cover in place with a Phillips head screwdriver. Lift up the back of the cover gently and locate two small clips holding the cover to the body of the PS3. Use the flat head screwdriver to gently snap these clips loose. Lift off the inner cover.

    • 6

Locate the silver box that is the power supply in the upper left of the PS3. Remove the four screws holding the power supply in place with a Phillips head screwdriver. Disconnect the plug connected to the power supply.

    • 7

Lift out the power supply a few inches and disconnect the power mains cable on the back of the power supply. Place the power supply to the side.

    • 8

Locate the Bluetooth card located just in front of where the power supply goes. Note that some PS3 models lack this card. Remove the four screws holding the Bluetooth card in place and lift out the card.

    • 9

Locate the Blu-Ray drive on the right side and lift it out about two inches. Verify that the ribbon cable is not stuck on or connected (if there is no circuit board there will be no connection). Disconnect the small plug just in front of the Blu-Ray drive and lift the drive out to fully remove it from the PS3.
