How to Hook Up Surround Sound on a PS3 With HDMI Without Optical

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is capable of supporting surround sound audio with up to 7.1 channels using audio codecs, such as Dolby Digital and DTS. You can achieve digital surround sound output by connecting the PS3 to an audio receiver with either an optical or HDMI cable. Using and HDMI cable allows you to output the surround sound and high-definition video from a single cable.

Instructions

      Connect the PS3 to your surround sound system's AV receiver with an HDMI cable. Connect one of the HDMI cables to the HDMI output port on the back of the PS3 and the other end to an HDMI input port on the receiver.

      Power on your PS3 and scroll to the ̶0;Settings̶1; tab.

      Scroll down and select ̶0;Sound Settings.̶1;

      Select ̶0;Audio Output Settings.̶1;

      Choose ̶0;HDMI̶1; as your output method.

      Choose ̶0;Manual̶1; as the method for setting the output format.

      Select the output formats supported by your surround sound system. If you are unsure, refer to your surround sound system's owner̵7;s manual for information on what codecs it supports.

      Press ̶0;Right̶1; on the controller and press ̶0;X̶1; to save the settings. The PS3 will now output surround sound audio through the HDMI cable.
