How to Flip the PS3 Switch Before the Red Light Comes On

Many people think that holding in the front power button on the the PlayStation 3 (PS3) until it turns red will turn off the PS3. It doesn't. It merely puts the system in standby mode. If you want to turn your off your PS3 without putting it into standby, you must flip the main power switch located on the back of the console or unplug the device.

  Eject the disk in the your PS3.

  Sign out of your PlayStation Network account.

  Sign out of your PS3 user profile.

  Reach around to the back of the PS3 and find the power switch. The power switch is a button that slopes to the left when it is powered on. It slopes to the right when it is powered off. Press the button down to power off your PS3, skipping the red light standby mode altogether. Slim PS3s do not come with a power switch in the back. To turn off the red light on a Slim PS3, unplug the power cable from its outlet.
