Position more players close to the line of scrimmage. You can do this by either calling specific defensive formations or adding extra defenders to traditional schemes. Defenses such as the 46 put more defenders on the line than the 4-3 or the 3-4. You also can counter run plays can by manually bringing a defensive back to the line. Once the ball is snapped, use this back to attack the runner.
Use defensive audibles to adjust the defense after lining up. Once it seems clear the run is coming, enter the game's options to move the defensive backs as needed, crowding the line or moving into press coverage. After the ball is snapped, have the defenders attack the ball, but be wary of a possible play-action pass or reverse.
Assign a strong linebacker to cover the running back. Open the "Coaching Strategy" menu by pressing "Start" while in game, then select "Player Matchups." Choose your top linebacker in this menu to cover the runner at all times. Selecting a big linebacker to spy on the runner reduces the likelihood of the back breaking tackles.
