Model Numbers
Outwardly, most PS3s look exactly the same, but inside the machine each model is a little different from the others. Sony assigns a unique model number to each release of a new PS3 to distinguish between features. All PS3 models have model numbers beginning "CECH," but the alphanumeric combination that follows offers insight into the machine's features. For example, the first two models had model numbers CECHB01 and CECHA01, but only the A01 model had Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi
Sony released the two models simultaneously to give consumers a choice between a higher-capacity model (CECHA01, with its 60 GB hard drive) and a slightly less expensive version. The CECHB01 retailed for $100 less than its Wi-Fi-ready, higher-capacity companion. The Wi-Fi card in all PS3 systems uses the 802.11 b/g wireless bandwidth, which isn't as fast as wireless n, which is the standard for computer networks at the time of publication.
Other Models
After the first release of the PS3, Sony included Wi-Fi in each of the subsequent models. Sony released these models between March 2007, and September 2010. The models have different model numbers and follow an alphabetical pattern. For example, the CECHC01 is an earlier model than the CECHK01 or CECHL01 systems. All of the systems after C01 have Wi-Fi.
Identifying Models
The model number is located on a sticker on the back of every PS3 model. If you didn't buy the system new, or if you received your PS3 as a gift, you may not know which model you have. The sticker with this information is located beneath the cooling vents on the left-hand side of the back panel on slim PS3 models and above the cooling vents on the left-hand side of the back panel on all other models.
