How to Connect Your PlayStation 3 to the Internet

If your PS3 is online, you can enjoy multiplayer matches, messages with friends, PlayStation Eye video chat and many more features, all available with your free PlayStation Network account. Setting up the Internet connection on your PS3 is simplest when you use an Ethernet cord, but that may not be a practical option in your home, and you can easily set up a wireless connection if you prefer. Both options shouldn't take more than a few minutes to complete.

Instructions

  1. Wireless Connection

    • 1

Turn on your PS3 and navigate to the "Settings" section of the XMB menu.

    • 2

Select "Network Settings." Select "Internet Connection" if you see that it's set to "Disabled" and change it to "Enabled."

    • 3

Select "Internet Connection Settings." Throughout this process, you'll advance to the next step on your screen by pressing the right directional button on your PS3 controller or remote.

    • 4

Select "Easy" followed by "Wireless" and then "Scan." You'll need to wait a few moments as your console looks for available wireless networks.

    • 5

Select the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.

    • 6

Select the security type for the network, if applicable. You should use a secure network if possible, since otherwise anyone within range can log onto your network without your permission. Most modern routers use the "WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK" option. The other option is "WEP" security, which is a weaker encryption.

    • 7

Type the password for the network.

    • 8

Review the settings at the "Settings List" on your screen. If you realize you made a mistake in any settings, press the "Circle'' button to go back and correct them. Otherwise press the "X" button to apply your settings. Your PS3 should now be connected to the Internet, and you can select the "Test Connection" option on your screen or just press the "Circle" button to return to the XMB menu.

    Wired Connection

    • 9

Plug an Ethernet cord into the Ethernet port on the back of your PS3.

    • 10

Turn on your PS3 and navigate to the "Settings" section of the XMB menu.

    • 11

Select "Network Settings." Select "Internet Connection" if you see that it's set to "Disabled" and change it to "Enabled."

    • 12

      Select "Internet Connection Settings."

    • 13

Select "Easy." The PS3 will take a moment to analyze the Ethernet connection.

    • 14

Press the "X" button when the PS3 displays the Settings List. Your console should now be online, and you can select the "Test Connection" option on your TV screen or just press the "Circle" button to return to the XMB menu.
