How to Assemble a Controller for the PlayStation 3

When you unpack your PlayStation 3 for the first time and set everything up, you can't just turn the controller on and expect it to work. The Dual Shock 3 controller that comes with the system has a built-in battery that will need to be charged. This is accomplished by assembling the controller and connecting it to the console in a very specific way using the included USB linking cable.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the two ends of the USB cable that came with your PlayStation 3. One end is physically smaller than the other and is shaped like an "M." The other is larger and is shaped like a rectangle.

    • 2

Plug the rectangular end of the USB cable into either of the two identically-shaped inputs on the front of the PlayStation 3.

    • 3

Plug the "M"-shaped end of the USB cable into the identically-shaped input on the top of the PlayStation 3 controller.

    • 4

Turn on your PlayStation 3. Flip the "Power" switch on the rear of the console to "ON" and press the "Power" button on the front of the console. The lights on the top of the PlayStation 3 controller will begin to flash.

    • 5

Press the "PS" button on the controller. This will turn on the controller, syncing it to the console. Because the controller has been assembled properly the internal battery will begin to charge. With the cable plugged into the console you can use the controller normally until the battery is fully charged, at which point it can be disconnected.
