How to Take Apart a Sixaxis Controller

The Sixaxis controller that comes with your PlayStation 3 got its name from the accelerometer on the inside of the unit. This device allows the controller to respond to not just your button presses, but also the physical movements of the controller. If you want to take apart a Sixaxis controller and take a look inside, you need a screwdriver and a few minutes of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Sixaxis controller (if the unit is currently on and connected to your PlayStation 3). Press the "PS" button on your Sixaxis controller. Select "Turn off Controller" from the list of options on your TV screen. The indicator lights on the controller will turn off.

    • 2

Turn over your Sixaxis controller so you can see the back.

    • 3

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the five individual screws holding the Sixaxis controller together. Two are located on each arm of the controller and one is located in the center of the rear panel, near the identification label. Set these screws aside.

    • 4

Grip the top of your Sixaxis controller with the thumb and forefinger of one hand. Grip the bottom of your Sixaxis controller with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand. Gently pull your hands apart, separating the two controller pieces from one another. Pay attention to the controller buttons on the top of the device -- pulling too hard could catch one of the buttons and break it. With the controller pieces separated, you can see all components on the inside of the controller, including the battery and circuit board.
