How to Fix a Bricked PS3 That Turns Off

When your PlayStation 3 won't load the default menu, your console is bricked. The console tries to load the system files but hits a corrupted file and either freezes or powers off automatically. You can fix your bricked PS3 using the recovery menu. The recovery menu is available to all PS3s running firmware version 2.50 or higher. You can use it to restore the system files or the entire file system. The recovery menu also allows you to format the system's hard drive and start completely over from scratch.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the PS3 but keep the "Power" button held down. The system will beep once and then wait a few seconds and beep once again. Release the button after the second beep.

    • 2

Wait one or two seconds and press the "Power" button again. The PS3 will give two single beeps again and then two consecutive beeps.

    • 3

Release the "Power" button after the two consecutive beeps. The system will power on and ask you to plug in a controller and press the "PS" button.

    • 4

Connect the PS3 controller to the system using the USB cable that came with the console. Press the "PS" button on the controller to activate the link and load the recovery menu.

    • 5

Select "Restore File System" to overwrite corrupted system files from the system's backup file. Start with this option because it does not erase settings or saved game files. The system will restart and attempt to boot. If it still powers off, repeat the previous steps to return to the recovery menu.

    • 6

Select "Rebuild Database" to overwrite all the system files. This setting does not overwrite system settings or save game files. The PS3 will reboot automatically after rebuilding. If it still won't come up, repeat Steps 1 through 3 to return to the recovery menu.

    • 7

Select "Restore PS3 System" to format the console's hard drive and erase all the data. This is the last resort, since it erases all the data on the hard drive and returns the system to the default settings.
