How to Take Apart a PS3 Blu Ray Player

The PlayStation 3 gaming console not only plays game discs but also Blu-ray DVDs. If the Blu-ray disc drive on your PS3 isn't functioning properly it could be a problem with an internal component, such as the optical beam that reads the disc. One way to diagnose the problem is to open up the Blu-ray drive. This process will require the console to be partially disassembled but it can be completed in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your PS3 and unplug all cables from the back of the unit as well as any controls plugged into the front of the unit.

    • 2

Use the tip of your screwdriver to pop off the rubber pad on the left side of the console if you are facing the front of it. A screw will be exposed where the pad was. Remove it and set it aside.

    • 3

Slide the top case of the PS3 to the left and then remove it from the console. An interior panel will be exposed.

    • 4

Remove the seven screws from the panel and pull off the panel to expose the internal components of the console. The metal Blu-ray drive will be visible in the console.

    • 5

Lift the drive up to reveal a wide ribbon cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. Unplug the ribbon cable from the drive and remove the drive from the console.

    • 6

Remove all screws from the corner of the drive assembly and separate the top cover of the assembly from the bottom cover. It is now disassembled.
