Do DualShock 2 Controllers Work on the PS3?

The DualShock 2 controller for the PlayStation 2 can be used in conjunction with the PlayStation 3 console. Once connected, the DualShock 2 controller can be used to control your favorite PlayStation 3 games, as well as old PlayStation 2 games if your console is backward compatible. However, the connected DualShock 2 controller will not carry out all of the same functions that a PS3 controller can handle.
  1. Getting Started

    • The DualShock 2 controller was specifically designed for use on the PlayStation 2, so simply trying to insert one into the USB port of the PlayStation 3 will not yield positive results. However, you can purchase an adapter that will let you use your DualShock 2 controller with your PS3 console. These adapters can be purchased at video game shops or online retailers.

    Setting It Up

    • Connect your DualShock 2 controller into the adapter. Plug the other end of the adapter -- which has a USB lead coming from it -- into your PlayStation 3. Once connected, turn your PlayStation 3 on and your PS2 DualShock 2 controller will be recognized. The middle button on the DualShock 2 controller is the analog button and it functions like the "PS" button on the PS3 controller. Due to this, you can reset your PS3, turn the controller on or off and carry out other functions associated with the "PS" button.

    Limitations

    • While the adapter does allow you to use your DualShock 2 controller with your PS3 console, it cannot do all that a standard PS3 controller can do. For example, you cannot use your DualShock 2 controller for any games that require Sixaxis technology. Standard Sixaxis PS3 controllers contain a "rumble" feature, or a feature that causes your controller to physically shake during certain parts of games. The DualShock 2 controller does not feature this "rumble" effect when connected to the PS3 with an adapter.

    Considerations

    • The adapter that allows you to connect your DualShock 2 controller to your PS3 can also be used to connect that same controller to a PC. The adapter is a constant source of power, therefore you will not have to worry about your controller running out of battery power mid-game. If you own a PS3 that can play PS2 games, make sure the adapter you purchase can support the PS2 games you want to play most. Not all adapters support all games. For example, the adapter cannot be used to connect the PS2 "Guitar Hero" guitar into the PS3.
