How to Fix an Overheating PS3

All electronics generate heat when they are on, including televisions, computers and gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 3. They also include fans to keep components cool while under heavy stress. In most cases, you can operate your PlayStation 3 without performing any maintenance on it--whether you play it once a week or every single day. If your PlayStation 3 begins to overheat, you can perform certain tasks to eliminate excess heat before you need to send it in for professional repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any games from the PlayStation 3 and unplug it from the television and power outlet.

    • 2

Use canned air to clean excess dust out from the vents on the side and under the PlayStation 3 unit. Use a cotton swab to remove any dust you cannot blow out. Proper air circulation is crucial to keeping the inner components operational.

    • 3

Place your PlayStation 3 away from other devices that emit heat, such as other consoles or a window in direct sun. If the underside of the console gets too warm, try placing the unit on its side, instead, to allow more air to move through.

    • 4

Purchase a cooling fan to place beneath the unit for additional air circulation. Laptop coolers will work. You can also try placing a regular box fan in a nearby window.
