How to Install a Blu-ray Drive on a PS3

Replacing and installing a Blu-ray drive on your PlayStation 3 can prove to be much cheaper than replacing your entire system or purchasing a Blu-ray player. By dedicating some time and energy into your trusted system, you can safely install the Blu-ray drive without harming your machine. Installing the original style of a broken or faulty Blu-ray drive is the most beneficial and guaranteed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the black rubber screw cover located on the side of the PS3.

    • 2

Unscrew the lone screw from the smart plate. The smart plate is the black covering that holds the PS3 logo.

    • 3

Detach the smart plate from the PS3 by pulling it toward the hard drive bay and lifting it off.

    • 4

Extract a total of seven screws from the surface where the smart plate has been removed, which includes six 52mm screws and one 30mm screw.

    • 5

Separate the top cover of the PS3 from the back edge and relocate it toward the front of the machine and remove the top altogether.

    • 6

Disconnect the Blu-ray power cable from the PS3 motherboard and pull the connector out of its socket.

    • 7

Raise the Blu-ray driver from the edge nearest the power supply and move it away from the chassis so that you are able to access the ribbon cable.

    • 8

Flip the retaining flap on the Blu-ray ribbon cable socket and pull the ribbon cable out of the socket. You can now remove the Blu-ray drive from the PS3.

    • 9

Lift the flap on the connector that is holding the Blu-ray lens motor cable to the control daughterboard and pull the ribbon cable out of socket on the daughterboard. This should also be done with the lens data cable, the drive motor cable and the IR sensor cable.

    • 10

Remove the five screws that are holding the Blu-ray control board to the drive. Also remove the metal ground springs from under the screws in the corners.

    • 11

Move the daughterboard from the rear edge and glide the daughterboard from under the top case. The daughterboard is still connected by a cable, so do not remove it completely.

    • 12

Turn the daughterboard over without tearing the cable and pull the IR sensor cable out of the socket.

    • 13

Follow this procedure in reverse order to reassemble the PS3.
