Reasons for the Mature Rating on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" is rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Rating Software Board (ESRB). It is intended for gamers 18 and older due to language, drug references, intense violence and excessive amounts of blood. "MW2" was released in November 2009 and is available for a variety of gaming platforms.
  1. Language

    • The language in "MW2" may be inappropriate for gamers under the age of 18. Characters use profanity in English and Russian. Players on multiplayer missions must engage in live chats, and any of them can include profanity. Online interactions are not rated or monitored by the ESRB.

    Drug References

    • "MW2" has a few obvious drug references. In the multiplayer portion, a gamer can unlock certain emblems to add to a player profile card. Some of these emblems include a marijuana leaf and a marijuana joint.

    Blood

    • The game is a first-person shooter and has a large amount of blood. "MW2" prides itself on being realistic. A character struck by a bullet will spout graphic blood. A character not instantly killed but wounded will react in pain. Pools of blood are shown next to the wounded bodies.

    Violence

    • The biggest reason for the "Mature" rating on "MW2" is its excessive amount of violence. In one mission called "No Russian," the gamer can open fire on unarmed civilians in an airport. At the start of the game, the player has the option to skip the mission if he finds it disturbing or offensive.
