What Kind of Mics Work for PS3?

The PlayStation 3 video game system supports in-game chat between players in certain online game environments. This voice chat is facilitated by user microphone systems in the form of wireless and wired headsets. Unlike other gaming systems, the PlayStation 3 offers compatibility with both Sony-branded headsets and third-party mic systems as well. Headset compatibility usually depends on the device, manufacturer and technology standards certification in compliance with the PlayStation 3 device protocols.
  1. Bluetooth Headsets

    • The PlayStation 3 offers wireless mic use through Bluetooth-powered headsets, like those you might purchase for mobile phone use. You simply pair your Bluetooth-enabled headset to the PlayStation 3 the same way you would pair it with any other Bluetooth-capable device. Most common Bluetooth-certified headsets will work with the PlayStation 3, including the Bluetooth headset developed by Sony designed specifically for the PS3 system.

    USB Headsets

    • The PlayStation 3 also features USB slots on the front of the gaming console which can be utilized to connect USB wired headsets. By simply connecting a USB headset and setting the headset as the input and output device for the system, a player can communicate within online games. Most USB-certified headsets are functional with the PlayStation 3, as is the USB-powered headset Sony developed specifically for the older PlayStation 2 system.

    Software Compatibility

    • Headset systems are limited to use during PlayStation Network online gameplay on an as-included basis determined by the game manufacturer. It is known that PlayStation 2 games played though the PlayStation 3 system online will not work with any headsets connected to the system. It is also recommended that the user contact the headset manufacturer to check compatibility with the PlayStation 3 device before purchase to ensure compatibility.

    Accessory Pairing Manager

    • Any peripheral hardware (including headset systems) is paired with the PlayStation 3 system though the system's "Settings" panel. Within the "Settings" area the user is directed to access the "Accessory Settings" menu to register a device with the PlayStation 3 compatible functions it can perform. For Bluetooth headsets, the user will need to select "Register Bluetooth Device" before accessing the "Audio Device Settings" panel. Both USB and Bluetooth headset users can set the sound input and output of their headset using the "Audio Device Settings" panel.
