How to Flip the PS3 Switch Without Turning It Off

There are two different ways to turn off a PlayStation 3. One involves completely shutting down the unit, and disconnecting it from all power. The other involves putting it into "Standby" mode. While the unit is technically off in "Standby" mode, it is still drawing electricity; pressing a single controller button can boot the unit back up in seconds. Using a third-party trigger switch to cut the power to a PS3 is not recommended as it doesn't allow the hard drive its power-down sequence and may lead to data corruption.

Instructions

  Locate the small circular button in the center of the Dual Shock 3 controller with the "PS" logo. This is the button used to power on the console, return to the PS3 main menu and power off the console.

  Press and hold the circular button in the center of the controller. After three seconds, the screen on the TV will go black and a series of text-based options will appear. This menu will appear whether you were watching a video disc, listening to audio or playing a game.

  Select the "Turn off Console" command from the menu on screen. This will power down the PlayStation 3 and switch it into "Standby" mode. This allows the console to shut down without actually turning it off. From this mode, the PS3 will power back on much faster.
