How to Remove the Top of a PS3

Removing the top of a PlayStation 3 allows you to access to its internal components. Although opening the PlayStation 3 gaming console is not a difficult task, performing repairs on Sony products without an authorization license will void your warranty. Taking the top off of the PS3 is the first step to dismantling the device completely as well. Get into the insides of your gaming system by removing the appropriate screws in less than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Small, flat-head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Set the PlayStation 3 gaming system on a flat surface, then disconnect the power cord. Unplug its power cable for the duration of the time the device is being opened and serviced; damage to its components or electrical shock may result if touched.

    • 2

Use a small, flat-head screwdriver to remove the rectangular rubber foot located on the left side of the PS3. This will expose the small Torx screw that holds the top cover into place.

    • 3

Remove the Torx security screw with the Torx screwdriver, slide the top cover to the left as far as it will go, then lift the cover to remove it. A moderate amount of force may be required to push the cover to its farthest position before removal. This exposes the second top cover that protects the internal components of the PS3.

    • 4

Remove the seven screws located along the edges of the second cover piece. Use the same screwdriver to remove the two, small clips on the back of the cover, then lift it out of place. The insides of the PS3 will now be exposed.
