Uncharted 2 Snow Effects

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves for PlayStation3 drew a great deal of attention for its technically proficient graphics. While the original Uncharted amazed with its water effects, developer Naughty Dog set out to raise the bar with weather effects in the Naughty Dog Engine 2. In particular, Naughty Dog spoke in detail about the impressive snow effects.

Naughty Dog Engine 2
- Evan Wells boasted about the snow effects of Uncharted 2, the "prettiest snow you have ever seen in a game!" Improvements to the Naughty Dog Engine 2 enabled more detail and higher polygon counts.
Attention to Detail
- As characters walk through the snow, they leave footprints and snow displaces. Snowflakes blow in the wind realistically, and accumulate on the character's clothes and hair. When a character goes indoors, any snow thaws slowly over time.
Ice
- Ice effects also look realistic. The way light reflects within ice gives "a look of incredible volume and density," says co-lead designer Richard Lemarchand.
Snow Effects on Gameplay
- Gamers will deal with the effects of snow in the game. The reduced visibility caused by snowstorms causes complications in the game's gun battles.
