Which TVs Are Blu-Ray & PlayStation 3 Compatible?

The Sony PlayStation 3 was a unique gaming console in its release in 2005. The first game console to play high-definition games and Blu-ray discs, the console demands a high-definition television to maximize both formats. However, users of older televisions will be happy to note that core game play is still possible, if not maximized. Regardless, the televisions compatible with the PS3 span what the industry offers. Users of standalone Blu-ray machines have the same requirements, with sets incorporating High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) ports ready for full high-definition resolution.
  1. LCD

    • Liquid Crystal Display, or LCD, televisions, are fully compatible with a Blu-ray player or PlayStation 3. These sets display images with 1080p ("p" meaning progressive scan) resolution, with many offering three-dimensional display features. With the addition of 3-D functionality from the many Blu-ray players and the PS3 console, the format and television type are almost designed for one another. The PS3 and Blu-ray players are both optimized at full resolution using an HDMI cable connecting the console to the television.

    Plasma

    • Plasma televisions' increased viewing angle and deeper blacks make viewing Blu-ray discs a more realistic experience. Playing games through a PS3 offers increased realism as well. Plasma displays range from 720p to 1080p, both within any Blu-ray player or PS3 console's resolution range. Many plasma televisions are also 3D compatible, adding to the realistic depth of image found in LCD displays sporting the same technology.

    DLP

    • Digital Light Processing televisions, a Texas Instruments product, are also ideal for PS3 and Blu-ray usage. These televisions offer large screen sizes relative to cost, making them superior in this category to flat-panel designs. These rear-projection sets are available up to 82 inches, making 1080p gaming and Blu-ray viewing all the more compelling.

    Analog Tube Televisions

    • High-definition television users do not have a monopoly on enjoyable PS3 and Blu-ray player usage. Analog televisions are compatible with both gaming and Blu-ray formats but at decreased resolution. Anyone using an analog TV can play games and watch movies at a 480i ("i" meaning interlaced-scan) resolution by using a component, S-video or composite cable connecting to the appropriate Blu-ray player video jack or PS3's A/V output. Once these users graduate to a high-definition television, adding an HDMI cable is all that is required to maximize the player or console's video output capabilities.
