How to Fix a PS3 Controller With Charging Problems

When everything is working properly, your PlayStation 3 Dual Shock 3 controller should begin to charge immediately after connecting it to your console. The included USB cable allows you to both charge the internal battery and play video games while that battery is being replenished. If your controller isn't charging properly you can fix it by taking a look at a few common solutions to everyday problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your PlayStation 3. The Dual Shock 3 controller can only charge while the console is turned on. From a completely depleted battery the controller will take about three hours to charge.

    • 2

Replace your USB charging cable. If the console and controller do not recognize that they are connected to each other, the problem may lie with the cable. Purchase a replacement cable either online or at an electronics store and connect your console to your controller. If the lights on the top of the controller begin flashing, the Dual Shock 3 is charging.

    • 3

Unplug the USB charging cable from both your controller and your console. Firmly plug the cable back into the USB input on the front of the console. Make sure the cable is plugged in all the way or the controller can't charge. Firmly plug the cable into the top of the Dual Shock 3 controller. Make sure both ends of the cable are properly inserted into the respective devices so that the charge can be completed as intended.
