Look at the total storage capacity available to the hard disk drive inside the PlayStation 3. This information is on the system's packaging. If the storage capacity is anything other than 20, 60 or 80 gigabytes , the PS3 does not have an Emotion Engine chip.
Find out if you have a newly released "Slim" PS3 or an older, "Fat" model . The "Slim" models are physically smaller than the older, originally released consoles. No "Slim" model has the ability to play games designed for the PlayStation 2. PlayStation 3 "Slim" models have the "PS3" logo on the top of the console, while the PlayStation 3 "Fat" models have the words "PlayStation 3" across the top.
Look at the model number on the identification label on the back side of the PlayStation 3. If the model number begins with "CECHB", "CECHA", "CECHE" or "CECHC" your PlayStation 3 has an Emotion Engine chip. If it has any other model number, the chip is not in the console.
